Not familiar with Amelia Island, Florida? Same here! Truthfully, I had never even heard of the place until the tourism board reached out to say they would love to host us. We didn’t hesitate to say yes because, despite many visits to the Sunshine State– I even rented a place in Miami Beach for a month earlier this year– my Florida travels rarely take me farther north than Orlando. But that changed quickly. Amelia Island is nestled in the northeastern corner of Florida, just 40 minutes from Jacksonville, and it feels like a world apart. Named after Princess Amelia of England, this barrier island boasts 13 miles of pristine beaches, rolling dunes, and lush maritime forests. It’s a haven for nature lovers, history buffs, and anyone who craves a slower, more meaningful travel experience.

Known for its nature, wildlife, sand dunes, and 13 miles of beautiful beaches, the island is for people from all walks of life looking for a relaxed, yet adventurous getaway. The vibe here is distinctly un-Florida in the best way—no high-rise condos or neon signs, just low-key beach towns, historic districts, and endless stretches of untouched coastline. The island’s history is rich, with influences from Native American tribes, Spanish explorers, French settlers, and eventually the British. You can feel that layered past in the architecture, the street names, and the stories locals share. It’s a place that rewards those who take the time to listen.
Luckily, traveling to Amelia Island is very easy within the United States. It’s a mere 2 hour flight from NYC, which makes it a great weekend trip. If planes aren’t your thing, it’s also a short scenic drive from major cities in the South (for example, it’s a 2.5 hour drive from Savannah, Georgia). We flew into Jacksonville International Airport, rented a car, and were checking into our resort within 40 minutes. The drive itself is pleasant—pine forests give way to salt marshes, and soon you’re crossing the bridge onto the island. For anyone on the East Coast, Amelia Island is refreshingly accessible, yet it feels like a remote discovery. Even in peak season, the crowds are manageable, and the atmosphere remains intimate.

Horseback Ride on the Beach
Horseback ride on the beach. This was my absolute favorite experience of my stay! I went to Kelly Seahorse Ranch and did an hour-long guided ride along the water. While I’m a huge fan of animals, views of the turquoise waters breaking against the fine white sand made the ride all the more pleasurable. What an exquisite experience. The ranch provides gentle, well-trained horses that are perfect for beginners and experienced riders alike. Our guide was knowledgeable and shared interesting tidbits about the island’s ecology as we trotted along the shore. The feeling of the ocean breeze, the rhythmic sound of hooves on wet sand, and the panoramic vista of the Atlantic—it’s the kind of moment you want to bottle up and revisit forever. If you do one thing on Amelia Island, make it this.
Kayak Tour of the Marshes
Kayak tour. We stayed at the Omni Amelia Island Resort (more on that later) and they offer tours of the marsh via kayak and SUP. The waters were calm, so the kayaking was way more relaxing that I initially thought it would be. 10/10 recommend. Our guide led us through winding waterways bordered by tall grass, where we spotted herons, egrets, and even a dolphin playing in the distance. The marsh is incredibly tranquil—no motor noise, just the gentle splash of paddles and birds calling overhead. It’s a fantastic way to connect with the island’s natural side and get a bit of exercise without feeling rushed. Even our three-year-old daughter, Kira, enjoyed sitting between us in the tandem kayak, pointing at every bird and fish she saw.
Enjoy the Beach
Enjoy the beach. As I mentioned above, Amelia Island has 13 miles of beaches, so it was a no-brainer to spend some time there. The waves are pretty calm and the water is relatively shallow, which makes it a wonderful option for kids to splash around in. The sand is also great for building castles, or, if you’re my daughter, claw through the sand and throw it around. Speaking of Kira, she loved the beach SO much that she cried every time we had to leave! We spent hours playing in the gentle surf, collecting shells, and simply lounging under an umbrella. The beach here isn’t crowded—even on a sunny Saturday, we found ample space to spread out. It’s the kind of beach that invites you to stay all day, with no agenda other than to soak up the sun and listen to the waves.
Explore Downtown Amelia Island
Explore downtown Amelia Island. Center Street is super quaint, photogenic, and has excellent boutique shopping. While you’re there, check out the Museum of History—it’s small but has lots of interactive displays that your kids are sure to enjoy. The museum is housed in a charming old building and covers the island’s past from the Timucua Indians through the Gilded Age. Afterward, wander the streets and pop into shops selling local art, handmade jewelry, and gourmet treats. We found a lovely bookstore with a selection of children’s books, and Kira picked out a story about sea turtles. The downtown area is very walkable, and you can easily spend a couple of hours browsing and grabbing a coffee at a sidewalk café. It’s the perfect antidote to the beach—a little culture and retail therapy.
Get a Treatment at the Ritz-Carlton
Get a treatment at the Ritz Carlton. As someone struggling to balance motherhood with a very busy career, some self-care was much-needed on this trip! I had an Ocean Healing Massage treatment at the Ritz Carlton which included a 30-minute therapeutic bath, sea salt full body exfoliation, and a warm salt stone massage. All I have to say is this: Oneika tested, Oneika approved! The spa overlooks the ocean, so you can hear the waves during your treatment—it’s deeply immersive. The staff were professional and attentive, and every detail was thoughtfully designed for relaxation. While it’s a splurge, it’s worth every penny if you need to recharge. After the massage, I spent an hour in the relaxation lounge sipping herbal tea and staring at the horizon. It was exactly what I needed.
Eat at Timoti’s Seafood Shak
Eat at Timoti’s Seafood Shak. It’s no surprise that Amelia Island has very good seafood given its location. However, I have to shout out Timoti’s as it is the bomb! With a mouth-watering menu that runs the gamut from clam chowder to lobster rolls, there are tasty treats for everyone (as well as non-seafood options for those who fancy them). There’s awesome patio seating and Kira especially enjoyed the attached playground. The vibe is casual and family-friendly, with picnic tables and a laid-back atmosphere. I ordered the fried shrimp basket and it was perfectly crisp and juicy. Husband Kevin went for the fish tacos and raved about them. Even Kira, a picky eater, devoured the kids’ mac and cheese. Timoti’s is the kind of place you’ll want to visit more than once.
Where to Eat in Amelia Island
Speaking of eats, there are no shortage of spots to get fabulous food in Amelia Island. In addition to Timoti’s, here are a few others you should check out during your stay. The culinary scene here is surprisingly diverse, with influences from Southern, Creole, Spanish, and Portuguese cuisines. Whether you want a casual bite or a refined dinner with ocean views, you’ll find it.
Kitchen 251. Located in the Amelia Island Marina, this casual spot was my husband’s favorite restaurant of the trip! It serves up Cajun fare and the portion sizes are large– just the way we like ‘em. Kevin ordered the blackened redfish and it came with a mountain of dirty rice and vegetables. The outdoor seating overlooks the marina, so you can watch boats come and go while you eat. Service was friendly and fast. If you’re in the mood for spice and comfort food, this is your place.
Lagniappe. The cuisine here is distinctly Southern with a French Creole twist. We went for brunch and had shrimp and grits that were creamy and full of flavor. The building is a restored Victorian home with a wraparound porch, making the dining experience feel intimate and charming. Be sure to try the beignets—they’ll rival anything you’d get in New Orleans.
Coquina. This restaurant at the Ritz Carlton is great for tapas, but you’ll be blown away by the beach views. We stopped in for a sunset cocktail and ended up ordering several small plates: grilled octopus, tuna tartare, and a decadent chocolate dessert. The food is artfully presented and absolutely delicious. It’s on the pricier side, but the ambiance and view make it worth a special occasion.
Espana. The restaurant’s name gives a nod to the country of Spain but also features Portuguese cuisine. The food is excellent and the patio is absolutely gorgeous. We loved it! We shared a plate of paella that was loaded with seafood, and the sangria was fresh and fruity. The patio is strung with lights and surrounded by foliage, creating a romantic setting. If you can, go on a Thursday evening when they often have live flamenco music.
Where to Stay in Amelia Island
Our home away from home for our Floridian getaway was none other than the Omni Amelia Island Resort. Spread out over 1,350 acres of nature, the resort offered everything our little hearts desired. While I love booking accommodation that’s right on the beach, little Miss Kira was such a huge fan of the Omni’s splash pad that I’m going to make a conscious decision to book hotels that have one from now on! Since she can’t swim yet, the pad was the perfect way for her to cool down and have fun. Even better was being able to keep an eye on her from our private cabana which was right next to the pad… As I said, our little trio thoroughly enjoyed our time at the Omni and recommend it for your next trip to Amelia Island. The resort features multiple pools, a spa, several on-site restaurants (including ones we already mentioned like Coquina), and direct beach access. Our room was spacious with a king bed and a pull-out sofa, plus a balcony overlooking the pool area. The staff were exceptionally warm and accommodating, especially with Kira. They provided a pack-n-play and even left a little welcome gift of crayons and coloring books. For families, the Omni is a dream come true—it balances luxury with kid-friendly amenities seamlessly.
Beyond the resort, Amelia Island has other lodging options: charming bed-and-breakfasts in the historic district, vacation rentals along the beach, and the Ritz-Carlton for those seeking ultra-luxury. But for our needs, the Omni hit the sweet spot between convenience, comfort, and value.
So as our weekend in Amelia Island taught us, Florida is SOOOOO much more than Orlando, Miami, and The Keys!
